St. Paul's Methodist After School Program Internship

11/17/21 Yesterday I went for my first day at the St. Paul's Methodist Church internship. I was very excited because I knew I was going to be working with children which I enjoy, but I was also a little nervous because I didn't know exactly what I was doing and I hoped all the kids would like me. When I got there all my fears immediatly went away because the internship coordinate was super nice and seemed really grateful to have me there. She gave me a quick run-down of what I would be doing and I got started chatting with some of the kids while they had their snacks. There was a large range of age from 1st to 5th grade and I sat at a table with 3 kids in different grades. After snack I helped with homework, this was probably my favorite part because I loved seeing the expressions on the girls faces when they understood a new concept. They worked on math and reading, and although it was a struggle they got through a sizeable chunk and I think they enjoyed it. After homework ti...

Communications Internship 4/22/2021

With the end of the school year coming up there is so much happening, but that also means there are always new and exciting things for me to write about. Over the past couple of weeks I have been working with Ms. Donahue and Emily to put together a page for the seniors, with a little blurb about them and where they are going to college. This page is on the website and is a way for people to celebrate and get to know the seniors and where they are off to a little better. In addition to this there was the NHS carwash a couple weeks ago so I was able to write about that, and to help promote our high school NHS chapter. The event was fun, and it was good to have something exciting to write a blog about.  This week there is a lot that is happening. First it is spirit week so everyone is dressing up, on top of that we had the bearkat banquet, we have quadfest, and we have prom. All of these events seem like they call for a big article, so I am going to write a big post about all of...

Communications Internship 3/3/2021

Over the past couple of weeks there have been some chaotic things happening that have prevented me from being consistent with my internship. The freezing temperatures that put us out of school for a week were a big disruptions, but now I am starting to get back on track and getting back into the routine. I have written about the upcoming art market, by putting a spotlight on two artists, one from middle school and one from High school. I have also written about the Chinese New Year celebration our school has had, and a Spanish yoga class. Although it has been a little chaotic getting back into a routine, I have still found it very interesting to be able to experiment with some different types of writing. I have been able to put spotlights on different students, do some photo galleries, write about cultural events, and all around expand my abiliites through these articles. I have also learned the value of planning ahead and prepping for what I am going to write, because this way it...

Communications Internship 12/11/2020

I have had another successful few weeks working at my internship and still further exploring writing. Over the past few weeks I was able to write about a presentation with Ian Schimmel, which was a little different than the otehr writing I've been doing. This time after listening and taking notes on the podcast talk I was able to form an article based on my notes. This was actually a very helpful format to do it in, because I was able to refer back and choose the parts of the talk that I thought were most interesting and that people would most like to read. One challenge that has come up has been coming up with article ideas towards the end of the semester. As the semester comes to a close, everyone begins to get busier and it has become more difficult to find things or people to write about. Although this has made it difficult to come up with articles to finish the semester strong, it has also been a good chance to look ahead towards next semester and brainstorm some ideas. I hav...

Communications Internship 11/20/2020

Over the past few weeks I have been able to grow even more through my internship, I feel like I have been able to grow my writing skills and also learn how to interview people and be an investigative journalist. I have been able to interview different people to get different quotes and been able to incorporate them into my articles. I have written about the HS play, and Dia Del Muertos and have been able to learn to look at these events in a different way because I am having to write about them. I have really enjoyed learning about the organizational process and everything that goes into planning articles for the next week and how to be able to plan ahead. Having Ms. Donahue help edit my articles has helped me be able to grow as a writer because I been able to learn the process and develop my articles. I have really enjoyed this internship so far because I feel like I am getting to know more about the school and events that are happening at the school so I can write about them. I ...

Post Oak School Communications Internship 10/22/2020

I have recently started a new internship working with the Post Oak school development team. With this I work to come up with ideas for articles to write, then draft them so they can be published in the weekly post. I've only started a few weeks ago, but I've mostly been working one exciting things that have been happening around the high school. This is different than any of my old internships because here I really get to focus on developing my skills and writing about topics that I am interested in. So far I have written articles about spirit week, the POPcast, and the NHS induction ceremony. I have been working with Ms. Donahue who is helping me to develop my writing and figure out my inspiration and voice. I am really excited to delve deeper into this because I think it is going to help strengthen my writing and also help me learn more about what goes on at the school as I work with other interns doing some similar work. Although I'm just starting I am really enjoying i...

Josey - Writespace (20) 3/12/20

This week I went back to Writespace after a short break and I really saw first hand how coronavirus is  ruining everything! At Writespace all of the workshops need to be moved online so that they can still go on, but they will not be in person. Antother thing that had to be done is to delete all of the free events like the quiet write ins and writer socials off the calendar. After I finished deleting all of these events I next added a bunch of raffel ticket emails and names onto a google sheet. These are people who wanted the Writespace newsletter and also wanted Writefest tickets. This did not take me too much time, although it was somewhat difficult to decipher some of the names. Once I finished this I moved on to learning the world of Zoom. Zoom is an online program used to teach classes, which Writespace is going to use to teach workshops. I did some looking around to find a simple way of how to get a conference going and the most effective way to teach. After finding a few goo...
