Josey - Internship Blog (7) 4/25/19

I went back to my internship after two weeks of absence due to the Arts Festival and Easter holiday. I started by doing some research on people who are going to be at Writefest to find a picture of them and also their bio. It was tedious work, but not completely uninteresting because I got to read all of the people's bios in the process which kept me interested. Next, I added more peoples names to Mailchimp trying to decipher the messy handwriting of many people. Most of the time I was successful, and with a little help, we got through them all. This didn't take too much time, so I started adding peoples names, address and member status into the database. I took my time on this because I kept getting nervous I would mess up the information. I eventually finished this, then went over them again, just to be sure I had put in the right information for the categories. I enjoyed doing this but also realized how precision is pretty important most of the time, especially on informatio...

Josey - Internship Blog 6 4/4/19

This week I went back to Writespace after a three-week break expecting things to be a little different. First off I hadn't been there in three weeks, and second Ms. Olsen, who had previously been in charge had taken another job so now Ms. Clarke was going to be working with me. I had worked with Ms. Clarke a little before so I wasn't too nervous about what I was going to be doing. Once I got there I immediately started by entering the very confusing world of Facebook. As someone who has never used Facebook before this was very confusing, but eventually, we figured out how to work the website and I got to work. I was posting the weekly posts of Wandering Wednesday and Sunday Celebrations so I would create the post than figure out how to schedule them in advance. The whole time I was working on them my heart rate was probably a little higher than it should have been because I was worried I might mess something up. I had to double check that I had set them to all post at the righ...

Josey Internship Blog (5) - 2/14/19

This week I went back to Writespace after what seemed like a long time of not going, I'm not really sure why though. When I got there I started with deciphering the last few words in some of the stories (with a little help from Ms. Olsen). After I learned that in a little bit Ms. Olsen will be stepping down from her position and going to work somewhere else, but luckily I will be able to continue my intersnhip. After I learned about Writefest and its goal, and why they did it. I also learned about the location etc. After I did a little sweeping up of the dust bunnies on the floor and a little organization but then worked on inputting information about Writefest. This was pretty tedious work, but I put the location to time, a description, but it was kind of scary because I was trying to make sure I did not put any information in wrong. I didn't want to mess any of the information up, but Ms. Olsen said I was doing a good job so I kept working on this until two when I had to leav...

Josey Internship Blog (4) - 2/7/19

This time when I went to Writespace I did some work that made me feel like a true intern. I started by adding email to the mailing list like I had done before, and I also worked on adding events to the calendar. Seeing how many events were on the calendar already I realized how busy work like this can be and how much organization goes into making sure people are in the right place at the right time and knew what they were doing. I worked on this for most of the time I was there, and surprisingly putting events into a calendar took a whole lot more focus than I thought it would. After I finished this my little break was watering the plants, wiping off some cabinets, and cleaning the whiteboard. This was a fun sort of task to do to keep the space looking pretty. It was a more relaxing time I had at my internship this week, and I am still looking forward to going back and working on different tasks, and seeing how a small business like this runs smoothly and what it takes to make everyth...

Josey-Internship Blog (3) 1/31/19

I went back to Writespace for the first time in over the month and a very interesting experience typing up stories. I finished writing up stories I had done one of the other times I was there, but I got to read more and take my time more in understanding what the people were saying. It was such a different perspective on Hurricane Harvey to see these people who had to go back to work and do so much more than they normally would to recover there theatre. It was very interesting to read all of the details they put into the writing and how strong their memories of the entire event were. I read stories from three different people and was able to understand more of what they went through repairing and rebuilding the theatre, and also just the stories of getting over there. It was all of their hard work and dedication and everything they had practiced and worked on. One woman also talked about how they still put on a play at the time it would have gone on, and with everything going on with t...

The second time I went to Writespace I had a little bit of an idea of what I was doing, so I was not quite so nervous. I started out by working through all of the workshops they have given and making sheets of the attendence, and other information people had filled out at these workshops. This led to up to creating an email list of who all wanted to recieve emails from Writespace, although it was tedious work it was pretty fun to do, and it mad me feel very proffesional while I did it. Doing this took up the whole time I was there, but I thought it was a very different perspective to see how much work goes into a simple mailing list, something we don't put much thought into, but actually takes quite a bit of effort for us to create. Doingn this was very interesting and I definitely got better at using the spreadsheets while I was working with them. Tedious work is something that people often do not enjoy doing, but now that I understand how important it can be to a business, and al...

I went to Writespace for the first time, very nervous because I was expecting to have an interview. Although I did have a short interview, it was not nearly as nerve-racking as I expected it to be. After that, I went straight to work doing whatever they needed me to do. This particular time I was typing up the schedule for the upcoming months, and also typing up stories about the Ally Theatre from Hurricane Harvey. Writespace seems like they do a lot of great work, especially with their workshops teaching classes from anything about technique to how to finish a story or a book. Just from the little bit of work I did there, I saw a lot into how much effort goes into putting on the workshops, getting sponsorships, and working with different partners. I saw all the work that went into organizing everything. I got to meet people who worked at Writespace even though it was a pretty small staff, but it seems like they have volunteers who are very helpful to their organization. I was not real...
