I went back to 6ft press today after Thanksgiving break and got back to work on the marketing plan. I did this for a while before showing it to Mr. Voorhees and doing some improvments. I started to make more of a plan on how to get reviews for a book on Goodreads, Amazon and also ways to help people get more of an idea of where they can get the book. This took me a while as I tried to go around and find people who wrote good reviews and figure out way to get them to find the book. Most of the stuff I found was on making sure the author is active on this social media and that being this way is a great option for having more people find the book. This took me a while to figure out everything but once I did I was able to find some good strategies that I think would work really well. This took the whole time I was there but at the end I got to meet some people he works with which was interesting to see what he does.

I went to 6ft press again and went to work addressing and mailing copies of the American Struggle book. This was a process with many steps including putting stickers on the books, copying the address onto the mailing stickers, then trying to fit as many books as I needed into a small envelope. Although it is not hard work it is also not boring because I get to see all the place accross the US these books are being sent out and see all the work it takes with out even having a guarantee your book will be reviewed by these people. This took up quite a bit of my time, but once I finished I moved on to trying to find addresses and people to mail more copies of the books to. I had a list of companies which was helpful, but I still had to do some digging around to figure out how many copies of the books needed to be sent, who specifically to mail it to, the addres, and any other rules that may apply to having to book sent to these places. I realized I had kind of been taking advantage of having all these names and addresses laid out infront of me, because it was not easy to find names or make sure it was going to the person for YA books as opposed to children or adult books. Eventually I kind of got the hang of where to look though and was able to get through a good amount of the list. I had a good time at 6ft press learning more about the pubslishing and spreading the books all accross the U.S.

This week I went back to 6ft press and immediatly got to work on a new project I would be doing for the next couple of weeks. This project was to create a marketing plan for a new book that is coming out about Jacob Lawrence's protest painting collection. I had no idea where to start on this so I spent a majority of the time research marketing projects and even where to start. I also had to specifically learn about how to create one of these marketing projects in a book. This took the whole time I was there but I got to learn about marketing and how important it is to have a marketing plan like this for promotion and for ways to make money off of the book. This was a lot of work especially because there were lots of bussiness acronyms I didn't know and kept having to look up, but eventually I got a pretty decent amount of work done and had fun getting to start on a project I can work on for a while.

This week I unfortunately was not able to do too much work because Mr. Voorhees' flight was delayed. When he sent me work it was finding key words for books that made them more easy to stumble across or find. I first read a sheet about what words worked best and how to avoid copyright when coming up with words, then after I looked at a list of keywords that had already been written on these books then tried to expand the list to make them easier to find. This took longer than I expected because it was actually pretty difficult to come up with words that still related to the book to a certain degree but were also a way to expand the audience that may come across these books. Once I cam up with these topics I sent them back to Mr. Voorhees'. Although I was disappointed I was not able to go to 6ft I was glad I got the chance to see a little bit into the promotional side of publishing.

Today I walked to 6ft press and finished up with mailing all the envelopes for the stonewall book list. I remembered how to do all of this from last time so it was pretty easy and I finished pretty fast. After this I helped to put some new books on a shelf. Once I finished this I started to read responses people had written to an art series from a museum. The art was a series of panels from an African American artist from the 1950's. Most of them were about segregation or the civil war and sent powerful messsages to the reader. I was reading through all the responses that these students had written and some came in the form of poems, some were relating them to experiences or stories. They all shared a different experience of a person and shared. It was a very long reading but I got about 70 pages in and am planning on finishing this week. This reading gave me an idea of what 6ft is doing that is different from the books I had been looking at. It is a different approach on writing by looking through this art and the response people have to the art. I am excited to go back next week to learn more about what they do and to learn how to help out and do different work.
